He is settling in well and is becoming more secure and confident. We
have never allowed our dogs up on the furniture so it was rather
comical when
Preston
arrived in our house because he immediately leaped up on the couch. He
is allowed up on the foot stool. Lol. I have attached a photo. And he
is allowed up on the large ottoman downstairs and enjoys lying on it
when we are watching TV. He also has a large king size bed and sleeps
through the night.
It hasn't been a completely smooth transition. He has had a couple of
accidents in the house at weird times like when I lay down for a nap
and my husband closed the bedroom door. Not a big deal and we realize
our boy has been through a lot lately. No mistakes today and he seems
much calmer.
We thought we could just let him out the back doorstop to do his
business but he needs us to accompany him. But this afternoon he
stayed out for about 10 minutes after I came inside. He was busy
digging in the snow. So that's progress.
My friend said we should call him Billy Preston after the musician.
Lol
Update October '20
Preston is well and overall is a lovely dog but can be a bit of a
Jekyll and Hyde. He was bitten by a pit bull while at the dog park
when he was young and since then he shows aggression towards some
dogs. So we just don't take him to dog parks anymore. Better for him
and for us. Not sure if his aggression is from that dog bite or if he
just matured and prefers human company. We took Preston to a personal
trainer and boy is he a quick learner. Too quick as a matter of fact!
He is somewhat protective of his food and sometimes gets growly if you
try to pat him when he is lying down but is fine as soon as he stands
up. Overall he is very friendly to people and kids. Who knows what he
has experienced in his past. So we cut him some slack while
recognizing that he needs to know who the boss is.
Preston enjoys being at the cottage but is not a huge fan of swimming.
We had a DNA test done which showed he was 80% lab, 10% American
Staffordshire Terrier and 10% bulldog which would account for his
large chest.
Here
is a photo of Preston living his best life at the cottage and at home.
