It was
a long drive home from the SPCA, but Jeannie was so good in the car
and spent her first night away from the SPCA in a dog friendly hotel.
She has settled in nicely in New Hampshire. She and her big
sister, Lucy, get along very well and really enjoy playing together.
Lucy recently had shoulder surgery and, as you can see, the pup was
comforting her.
During
a stretch of cold rainy weather, her favorite place was in front of
the fireplace. Once
the weather turned warm, she decided that sunning herself on the deck
was a good way to spend the afternoon, especially after taking her
first swim in the lake. It was a bit of a shock when she jumped in,
but she was swimming within seconds.
Most
of the pictures show her sleeping or resting because when she is not,
she's moving too fast to catch on camera. We call her the little
brown tornado. Puppy school starts soon, although we have already
nailed sit and are making progress on stay.
She is
incredibly friendly and loving, eager to please, and as cute as they
come. We are so happy to have her. Thanks for taking such good
care of her and making it possible for her to be part of our family.
Update
June ’12 …
Just
wanted to let you know that Jeannie is now 30 pounds, growing like a
weed and doing really well with training. She loves puppy school and
can sit, down, stay, heel, wait for her food, wait until I tell her
it’s okay to go through the door, and more. She’s a bright and sweet
pup. She’s making her older sister a little crazy on occasion and has
taken to eating slugs and got a toad … so we still have some work to
do, but she’s happy, healthy and lots of fun.
Jeannie is doing great. We have puppy school every Sunday. She
is such a fast learner. She learned to shake in less than two
minutes. She and Lucy are getting along really well. Lucy has
finally learned to tell her when she's being too rambunctious. I was
a little worried that Lucy wouldn't help her to learn boundaries.
Most of the time they wrestle and play tug and chase each other. It's
just what I was hoping for. And she is so sweet and so funny. I was
thinking just this morning that I feel very blessed to have two such
sweet girls. I'm so grateful this worked out.
Update October '12
This is
supposed to get me used to being handled by vets or groomers.
It's just embarrassing. At least all the other dogs had to do it
too.
Update
August '13
It's been awhile since you have heard from us but Jeannie (a.k.a.
Hazel) is doing really well. She's a little over a year and half old
now and a big and very strong girl at 55 pounds. Although she's all
muscle,
there isn't a mean bone in her body. Not only is she incredibly
loving, playful and cuddly, but she makes me laugh out loud multiple
times a day.
After puppy school and basic obedience training, we invested in some
one-on-one training because she is a very high energy girl. She
soaked up the training like a sponge. Within 20 minutes, she learned
to jump off the dock, retrieve a toy and climb the ladder all by
herself to get back on the dock. Now that she understands the "come"
command, we snowshoe in winter and, in the warm weather, we hike and
swim.
She and Lucy (my now 12 year old chocolate lab) play tug every morning
and get along like typical siblings. Sometimes loving and sweet
to one another, sometimes rough and loud. I'm so crazy about my girls
and so grateful to you for rescuing Jeannie and helping me to find her
and bring her home.
I hope you all are well and all your furry creatures are finding
wonderful homes quickly.
Update September '13
I think you may have this one on the Happy Tails page already but it
is my favorite of the two of them together. I am trying to teach
myself to draw so I used this picture as the subject of my first
attempt. I'll include that too.
Update
February '14
It's been awhile since I sent an update
about Jeannie (or as we know her, Hazel). In December, Hazel and I
lost our beloved Lucy (a 12 year old chocolate lab). I was
devastated. But maybe what was worse was seeing Hazel's reaction. My
typically crazy dog would eat her breakfast, go to where Lucy's bowl
used to be, and then lay on my bed staring at the wall all day long.
I had never seen a dog grieve before. It was unbearable. So, I went
in search of a new playmate. We rescued Charlie at 5 months. He's a
chocolate lab and Catahoula leopard dog mix from Louisiana. They are
the best of friends. Hazel has the advantage of size but Charlie is a
tough little guy and he herds her all over the place. I just wanted
to share this next chapter in our lives. I still miss Lucy so much
but there is just enough chaos and laughter in the house to help me
through it. As you can see from the picture, they are getting along
famously.
I hope you are all well there. I am forever grateful that you took
such great care of my girl until I could adopt her and bring her home
to New Hampshire.
Update
July '14
It has been awhile since I reported in on Hazel. She is now 2.5 years
old and still full of energy and mischief. We are now doing agility
training and she loves it. She is so smart and fast and far more
coordinated than I am. She has a brother (Charlie age 1) and sister
(Rosie age 6 months). They are all great friends. Our life in New
Hampshire is a little chaotic with three young dogs, but they are all
sweet and fun and keep me on my toes. Thought I would share a photo.
Hazel is in the middle. I remain grateful that you took such good care
of my girl until she could come join my family. I hope all is well
there.
Update September '14
Just thought
I'd share a picture of Hazel having great fun on her very favorite
obstacle on the agility field. Each week, we spend a few minutes
while she struggles to concentrate (as there is a lot going on in that
head of hers) and then she is amazing.
Today she did
a jump, teeter totter, weave poles, another jump, a tunnel, another
tunnel, a jump, through a tire, and onto a table all in one run. She
is so smart! The instructors says she has the smarts and the
enthusiasm to be very good. We just need to work on the control
part of the equation! She's significantly bigger than when she was
with you at the SPCA, no?
Update January '15
Hi again. It has been awhile since we checked in. I wanted to let you
know that Hazel is doing well. She turned three in January and is
still a crazy but sweet girl. We went snowshoeing today on the
protected lands near our house here in New Hampshire. Hazel and her
adoptive siblings (Charlie and Rosie) had a wonderful time in the
woods. I am sharing a photo of her cuddling with me so you can see her
sweet face.
I hope you are well and 2015 is good to you and all at the SPCA.
Update March '15
Hi! Just for fun, I had Hazel's DNA tested. She is an American Bulldog
and Boxer mix with a little English Setter and Rottweiler. What a
great combination! What a face. I hope you are well.
Update December '15
Just
wanted to wish you all very happy holidays. No snow yet in New
Hampshire but that doesn't stop Hazel from snoozing by the fire. This
is the first time I put up a Christmas tree since I got her because I
thought it might be too tempting for her. She has done great. She did
steal the tree skirt and ran around the house with it and she chewed a
card on one of the presents. But she has been really good around the
tree. My girl is growing up! Blessings to you all. Thanks again for
saving my crazy love bug.
Update September '20
She
is so great. We call her Hazel. She is 8 and still crazy. Here she is
at the lake. She loves dock diving. I love Hazel so much!!! Thank you
for saving her.
Update December ‘20
I've
had Hazel (a.k.a. Jeanie) now for nearly eight years. She makes me
laugh every day with her goofy antics. She has two canine siblings
and lives on a lake in New Hampshire (US) surrounded by woods and
hiking trails. I am so incredibly grateful to all of you for saving
her and for the joy she has brought to my life. Happy holidays to all
of you. Stay safe.
